Our K2C Cycle Tour, starting in Timbavati at dawn on 15 July with a new route, traversing through exclusive private roads in Thornybush and Kapama and ending back at the Timbavati hanger at dusk was a sublime success.
The Rotary Team set the scene before dawn by lighting fires and welcoming cyclists with coffee and pancakes, and the four pelotons set off at 10-minute intervals to the of sound of the kudu horn.
The water points along the route were set up and run by the Thornybush lodges, and the delicious breakfast supplied every year by Haenertsburg Rotary Club had started long before dawn to ensure that they were all set up and ready as the riders approached for their carb loading. The food was considered world class.
The whole effort of organizing an event of this magnitude is the logistics and attention to detail. All 21 members of the Hoedspruit Rotary Club, plus a number of helpers, were involved in organising the event, which is in its 7th year and our biggest fundraiser.
Proceeds will go to the reserves for anti-poaching activities as well as our community upliftment projects.
A few comments by cyclists:
“The day ran seamlessly, and it was by far the best event I have ever been a part of, including safety and back-up.”
“I hope that all those involved know just how much their effort is appreciated and noted, it was a privilege to be a part of such an incredible endeavour and I will continue to have K2C on my calendar as long as my legs will allow – the prizes were great!”
“Many thanks for an epic experience. It was world class and certainly a highlight in my life!”
In the words of the riders who participated, we will definitely hold the event in July next year. Watch this space.
